Iako je Gotovčeva Mila Gojsalića jedna od tri velike hrvatske junačke opere, nakon splitske praizvedbe 1960. godine, premijerno je u Splitu postavljena samo još jednom – 1995. godine u sklopu 41. Splitskog ljeta. Režiju potpisuje Ozren Prohić, a izvedbama će ravnati maestro Josip Šego.
Gotovac je 1948. pristupio radu na povijesnoj glazbenoj drami pod naslovom Mila Gojsalića. Ovaj put, Gotovac je krenuo drukčijim putem nego u svojim ranijim scenskim djelima. Napuštajući svijet raspjevane kantilene iz Morane i duhovita čarkanja iz Era s onoga svijeta, on je posegnuo za novom, povijesnom tematikom, koja je nametala i novi muzički govor. Opera se temelji na povijesnim događajima iz XVII. stoljeća, kad su se stanovnici Poljica, kneževine koja se nekoliko stotina godina prostirala između Splita i Omiša, povukli u brda pred turskom najezdom. Naslovna junakinja Mila, kći kneza Ivana, prividno pristaje postati žena turskog vojskovođe. Ona se kao narodna junakinja žrtvuje, te u samom središtu turske vojske baca goruću baklju u barut.

Although Gotovac's Mila Gojsalića is one of the three great Croatian heroic operas, after its premiere in Split in 1960, it was only staged once more in Split - in 1995 as part of the 41st Split Summer Festival. The director is Ozren Prohić, and the performances will be conducted by maestro Josip Šego.
Gotovac began working on a historical musical drama titled Mila Gojsalića in 1948. This time, Gotovac embarked on a different path than in his earlier stage works. Departing from the world of melodious cantilena from Morana and witty quarrels from Ero the Joker, he reached for a new, historical theme, which demanded a new musical language. The opera is based on historical events from the 17th century when the inhabitants of Poljica, a principality that stretched for several hundred years between Split and Omiš, withdrew into the hills to escape the Turkish invasion. The titular heroine Mila, daughter of Prince Ivan, seemingly agrees to become the wife of a Turkish military leader. She sacrifices herself as a folk heroine and, amid the Turkish army, throws a burning torch into the gunpowder.
